Who are we?

PapuArts is doing sustainable micro-development projects  in West-Papua since 2004.

(more info can be found at Papuarts 4-de pijler)

Being from this part of the world and therefore deeply understanding the enormous complexity of  local traditions ,we believe we understand some of the true issues and are in a position to help solve some problems in a direct, no-nonsense approach.

We strongly believe that helping on a small scale can already make a BIG difference.

We do this trough small, various projects or workshops, currently organized at our Stay.

          Examples of workshops in progress:

  • Stimulating the re-introduction of (almost) lost Art forms, from traditional weaving with woman-organizations  to traditional wood sculpturing for interested youth or adults

  • Language courses

  • Creative workshops for children

  • Environmental awareness

  • Recycling techniques

  • introducing Permaculture / forest gardening techniques

Examples of  realized or current projects:

  • 2004:Stimulating local woman organizations to re-manufacture traditional art-handcrafts with the result that some now even get governmental support to do so and can make some sort of  living out of it.

  • 2007:Distributing of a LARGE amount of waterproof(!) schoolbags, protecting precious, expensive schoolbooks when getting to school, sometimes in extremely fierce weather conditions. Some of them are still in use until today.

  • 2009:co developing a Papuan managed workshop-school for making Papuan-motives batiks.

  • 2011:supporting a local school with new computer equipment.

  • 2013:The building of Alter-Native Stay as a Centre from where new projects can be developed and where people from all over the World are able to stay with us and get involved... or just get a taste of the natural beauty that this Paradise has to offer.

And many, many more small-scale  projects  ,

too much to mention them all!

by staying with Alter Native Stay, you contribute & support directly to our local community

(Some of the Papuan- made handcrafts can be purchased at our Stay and are sold with the   Fair Trade philosophy.)
